Dr Steven Allen is a consultant radiologist with a specialist interest in breast and urological oncological imaging.

He trained in medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London and then undertook specialist radiological training at the Hammersmith Hospitals. He was appointed as a Consultant Radiologist at The Royal Marsden in 2006.

Dr Allen is the lead breast radiologist at The Royal Marsden’s hospital in Sutton, and the clinical lead for the Rapid Diagnostic and Assessment Centre there. He also undertakes breast screening radiology at the South West London Breast Screening Service at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London.

He is a specialist advisor to the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence in radiological breast interventional procedures, which is also a clinical and academic interest of his. He utilises several large biopsy devices, with which he performs minimally invasive procedures with the intention of obviating surgery in selected cases. He has had successful results with these and has a number of papers published (and in the process of submission) in this field. He has taught many trainees and fellow consultants in these techniques and has lectured nationally on this topic.

Dr Allen also co-leads the breast MRI service at The Royal Marsden, where several hundred examinations are performed each year, with clinical indications including symptomatic work up, pre-surgical planning and high-risk screening. He is supervising a research MD student in using the new 3T MRI scanner in breast MRI studies to quantify disease response in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy.

Further academic interests include the mammographic quantification of breast density, digital breast tomosynthesis, and CT and MRI angiography techniques for imaging the abdominal wall prior to breast reconstructive surgery, with research projects ongoing and in preparation in these areas.
