Rectal FAQ

We have a specialist consultant available almost every weekday, so it can usually be within 24 hours of requesting your appointment.  In some cases, you may be able to have your appointment scheduled for the same day. This of course depends on availability.

You are free to book an appointment with any of our colorectal consultants, all of whom are specialists in the field.

If you wish to see a specific consultant, please mention their name when booking. This, however, may lead to a small delay in your initial appointment.

The costs range from £250 for initial consultation to £350 for a second opinion and £180 to £225 for follow-up consultations.  There are additional charges for any investigations or diagnostic tests. More information.

After your consultant has made their diagnosis and if surgery is required, they will discuss this with you. With your consent our team will help schedule this in within a week of the decision being made, however, in some cases it can be quicker.

If surgery is not required, your consultant will explain to you any follow-up treatment that may be required.

Depending on the surgery you have, your consultant will advice on wound care prior to your appointment. You will be booked in by our team for a follow up appointment in order for your consultant to assess your wound.

Although wound infection is rare, you should still be aware of any changes to the wound site and surrounding areas.

Wound Infection

It is important that you keep the area of the wound clean and we recommend you gently bathe your wound in a warm bath every day. This will also help soothe the pain. Avoid soap, perfume products or salt until your wound is healed, this is to avoid any irritation to the wound.

If possible, try to wipe the area with alcohol-free wipes after each bowel movement to ensure it is clean.

Depending on how you feel and how active your work is we recommend you take a few days off. Avoid strenuous activities as running, lifting and exercising for the first week or so. Swimming is not recommended until your wound heals.
