Platelet Rich Plasma – Injection Therapy

Sports Injury Clinic

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is an innovative treatment in sports and orthopaedic medicine which uses your own blood for healing muscle, tendon and ligament injuries. The concentrated platelets found in PRP contain growth factors that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration.

Benefits of Platelet rich plasma (PRP)

If you are suffering from damage to your muscles, tendons or ligaments PRP is the perfect treatment.

Your body’s own ability to heal these sorts of injuries is relatively poor and often leads to scarring, which not only affects the function but also increases the risk of further damage. PRP gives the body a helping hand by mimicking your body’s inherent desire to heal itself.

Following a series of injections and a strengthening exercise program recommended by your consultant, you could see a huge improvement in your injury and a significant reduction of pain.

How does it work?

Treatment

To perform this treatment, your consultant will extract a small amount of your blood and place it into a filtration system. This separates your red blood cells from the platelets. The high concentration of platelets is then injected into your injured tissue, which initiates the body’s natural healing response.

Post treatment

After the treatment you will be given a prescription for pain medication for overnight use. Cold therapy and icing of the affected area may be used. Following treatment, a stretching and strengthening exercise program will be prescribed by your consultant, as thorough rehabilitation is vital for a rapid recovery.
