Skin Procedures

Day Surgery Clinic

What happens during your appointment?

At your initial appointment, your consultant will assess the area of concern, before which they will ask you to discuss your medical history. If further tests are required, your consultant will discuss this with you and have you referred appropriately.

Once your condition has been diagnosed, your consultant with your informed consent will talk you through the appropriate treatment procedure. Furthermore, you will be advised you on relevant wound care and your post procedure journey.

What are the different skin procedures available?

Cryotherapy

Warts are raised bumps that develop on the skin due to HPV. In order to remove them, your consultant will choose to freeze them with liquid nitrogen, this process is known as Cryotherapy. This freezes the wart and the surrounding area, causing a blister which then lifts the wart away from the skin. Depending on the size and nature of the wart, the process may need to be repeated. Cryotherapy is also used to remove veruccas and skin tags.

Curettage

This treatment is designed for non-malignant skin cancer, which is performed within the clinic under local anaesthetic. For this procedure, your consultant uses a curette (small circular ring like blade) to scrape off any affected tissues. This technique is also used to acquire a tissue specimen for analysis or to remove small lesions.

Debridement of wounds

If you have a wound that won’t heal, your consultant will remove any surrounding dead or infected tissue. This removal allows room for the wound to heal. Depending on the progress of your healing, this treatment my have to be repeated.

Drainage of haematoma

A haematoma occurs when blood starts to collect outside a larger blood vessel. If this becomes painful or does not seem to improve over time, your consultant will opt for it to be surgically drained. This is done under local anaesthetic within the clinic.

Epidermal (sebaceous) cysts removal

Sebaceous cysts are benign cysts that may contain some liquid or semi liquid material. These are caused due to blocked or damaged glands. They are completely harmless but if you do wish to have them removed, your consultant can do so either by draining it, or surgically removing it.

Excision of lesion

If you have an abnormal lesion on your skin this may be either in the precancerous stage or a non-melanoma skin cancer. Your consultant will surgically remove the lesion along with tissues from the surrounding area. This procedure can be performed on lesions including, melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Lipomas removal

These are benign fatty tissues that can slowly grow under the skin. They are very rarely harmful and if you do wish to have them removed, your consultant can do so under local anaesthetic (depending on the size of the lipoma). An incision is made in the skin to aid in removing the lipoma before sewing it back up.

Mole removal

If you wish to have a benign mole removed for cosmetic reasons, your consultant could have them excised surgically as a day case under local anaesthetic.

Removal of porta catheter

A porta catheter is a device placed under the skin that is connected to a catheter during surgery. Post-surgery, you can discuss with your consultant to have this removed. They will do so by making a small incision, under local anaesthetic, and removing the device as a whole. The skin is then sutured in to place, and our nursing team will help guide you with information on your wound care.

Scar revision

If you have an unpleasant existing scar look less conspicuous and blended in with the surrounding skin, your consultants will discuss with you your options to improve or reduce the appearance of scars. This may include topical treatments or minimally invasive procedures performed under local anaesthetic. Depending on the size and character of the scar you may be referred on to our plastic surgeon.

Skin tags

Skin tags, are small, harmless growths that hang off your skin. They can be removed using cryotherapy. Other treatment options for the removal of skin tags include curettage and excision under local anaesthetic.

Wide excision of skin cancers

Your consultant will perform a wide excision under local anaesthetic to remove the area they suspect to be cancerous. During this procedure they may also remove surrounding tissue to ensure that all the cancer is removed.
